My satisfaction with this configuration is based on four observations:ġ) my Wolfson DACs truly sound better with an upsampled 24 bit signal than with a 44.1 kHz/16 bit 'bit true' signal (although my ESS 9018 DAC sounds about the same because it first upsamples everything it receives) Ģ) based on sound quality, the Quicktime upsampler (with padding to 24 bits) is as good as any other algorithm I have tried ģ) the sound quality of the 24 bit software crossover has proven to be very pleasing (of course, bi-amping is required!) Ĥ) I appreciate the convenience of the ALAC file format and my network contains a mix of Win7 and OS X systems. Win7 enables me to use Thuneau crossover software, which outputs via ASIO. I very happily use Win7 (32 bit) with Quicktime and WASAPI. However, it may not be safe to assume that every non-'bit-true' signal is necessarily inferior. I understand the general desire to achieve 'bit-true' output based on the history of audio signals being abused by computer operating systems. Properties (DAC is again shown in screen)Įnhancements (disable all enhancements ticked)Īdvanced (24 bit, 96000hz studio quality) and under Exclusive Mode (both boxes are ticked)Īny suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Playback (check DAC is shown with a green tick) In Windows 7 go to control panel / hardware and sound / manage audio devices and then under each heading Downlaod latest version of Quicktime player (7.6.8) and go to edit/preferences/audio and set to Windows Audio Session / 96 hz, 24 bit and General MIDIģ. Download latest version (10.0.1) of iTunes and turn volume to 100% and all enhancements under preferences/playback to offĢ. My question is can someone please verify that the following is correct for iTunes to provide bit perfect from Windows 7 after connecting a sound card or DAC to each computer.ġ. I have a lot of expereince with iTunes and it therefore makes sense to manage our media using it. They play their music using a variety of PCs,laptops, iPhones and iPods and we also have apple TV in the main living room. I am about to set up a NAS so my family can access all our music and movies etc in one location using an ethernet (wired) LAN. I have J Rivers Media Player on my PC and Itunes/Pure Music on my Macbook Pro as my players.
